Happy Easter!

Hooray! It's Easter! 🦋🐰 It's my favorite holiday ever (more than Christmas, even if the mass just has too many readings and lasts forever!)

DIY Anti-Aging Face Serum

I've received a lot of messages since the Rated K guesting so I'm sharing the recipe and some information on the benefits and how to use each ingredient. Read on!

Why Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is the most potent ingredient to help regenerate collagen. Collagen is the body's natural binder, holding everything together. It determines the elasticity of the skin, so as we get older and the body's regenerating process dips, so does our collagen production, er go our skin starts to sag and wrinkle.

You used vegetable glycerin in Rated K, where do I find it? What if I can't find any?
Vegetable glycerin is easily found in baking supplies stores. Since the point of DIY is to use what you have in your kitchen cupboard, you may replace this ingredient with any carrier oil you're comfortable to put on your skin such as virgin coconut oil (as photographed), grapeseed oil, almond oil or even marula oil.

What measurements do we use for the ingredients?
Like in any product you will try for the first time, I suggest you make a spot test first on your jaw to check for any sensitivities. Once you're confident with your blend, start with just 1 crushed tablet of ascorbic acid and add in the distilled water and carrier oil/ glycerin in equal proportions and mix. Add more of the water or the glycerin to achieve the consistency you like. Some like it more runny and easily absorbed by the skin (like those who have naturally oily skin or prefer sleeping in airy and warmer temperatures), so more water is preferred. For those who like basking in the smooth oily feeling before going to bed (especially for those with extremely dry skin like me) then more of the oil will work.

Why do I have to store it in an opaque bottle?
An opaque bottle serves as a tinted container,  keeping the ingredients away from sunlight because citrus-y ingredients are photosensitive. Consequently, this also means that you have to use this product when you're not going under the sun so ideally only at night. Otherwise, you may experience stinging, blisters and a more accelerated pigmentation when these ingredients are applied on the skin.

Personally, however, I use a blend of essential oils for specific skin concerns. I'll be coming out with a line of custom blend essential oil's so let me know how this works out for you or if you'd like to order a blend from me instead ;) so much fun taking care of our skin noh?

Caveat: like any DIY or homemade product, only good intentions go in it. Admittedly though, without an actual chemist mixing and studying the product you will put on yourself, you really have to trust your own instincts and thoroughly know what you're putting on your skin (even with commercial products you buy, read the label). Here are some pointers to consider when making a Vitamin C serum, regardless of the many benefits it can do for you:
  • The carriers you use may either cause the vitamin C to be a) impenetrable to the skin if it has recrystallised, which happens when dissolved in water or only penetrates up to the lipid-based barriers of your skin when you use glycerin; or b) stripped of its anti-oxidant properties.
  • This may cause irritability due to, as mentioned earlier a) exposure to the sun therefore causing a sting-y feeling; or b) a low pH level caused by dilution, when absorbed by the skin that has its own acidity level, may be too low, therefore, irritable.
  • On the other hand, a higher concentration, too, may cause the pH level of the product to be too high that it won't work at all; and
  • Ascorbic Acid is very unstable, therefore, if stored improperly will spoil fast so don't make too much. Best to make in small batches.

March is for Moms and Vacations

I subscribed to Auiee Suarez's newsletter monthly, and she's given such great advise the last time I've seen her in years since working with her in Summit Magazines. This was during Mommy Mundo's Dove Baby Shower event where I did Janice, Apples and Kristine's makeup that day. She said that we have to realise that our life has seasons too, like years. And so does our bodies. This March definitely marks several season changes for me and I bet as well as for you too.

Beautiful Chaos

I get so frustrated when I miss something. I remember the time when I can memorize 48 pages of a script for me to perform a live monologue over 20 times in a span of 3 months and never miss a bit. Felt like eons ago now that I think about it. My mind is just not as sponge-like as it was in my early 20s after 3 kids and a lifetime of endless to dos.
